Toast alternatives for independent restaurants.
Operators leave Toast for three repeating reasons: the software only runs on Toast-branded hardware, processing is locked to Toast Payments and Toast publishes no card rate at all, and NerdWallet’s review (updated January 13, 2026) describes a two-year processing agreement with early-termination fees. The strongest alternatives — Square for Restaurants, Clover, Lightspeed, TouchBistro, and FoodyOS — split on exactly those three axes. FoodyOS’s position is the simplest: one flat $149/mo plan with every module included, month-to-month, on tablets you already own, with online checkout on your own Stripe account. For the direct head-to-head, see FoodyOS vs Toast.
Why operators go looking for a Toast alternative
Toast’s published pricing (retrieved August 2026) lists three restaurant cards: a Starter Kit at “Starting at $0/month”, a Point of Sale plan at “Starting at $69/month”, and Build Your Own at “Custom pricing” — no figure. The catch is not the sticker — it’s what the sticker leaves out. POS only. Toast publishes no price for online ordering or kitchen display — both are add-ons quoted on request, so a comparable bundle costs more than this floor. Software also runs only on Toast-branded terminals, KDS screens, and handhelds, so the hardware is a sunk cost the day you switch. And every card runs through Toast Payments, at a rate Toast does not publish anywhere on that page: NerdWallet’s Toast review (updated January 13, 2026) puts the rates at 3.09% + 15¢ pay-as-you-go, or 2.49% + 15¢ card-present if you purchase hardware upfront, and notes the two-year processing contract with early-termination fees.
None of that makes Toast a bad product — it makes Toast a single-vendor bet. Hardware lock-in, processor lock-in, and multi-year terms are the recurring switching triggers we break down at length in our State of Restaurant Tech 2026 report. The alternatives below each unwind a different part of that bet.
How the alternatives stack up
| Platform | Monthly software cost | Processing model | Contract | Hardware |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FoodyOS | $149/mo flat — every module included | Your own Stripe account — 2.9% + 30¢ online, paid to Stripe, not to us | Month-to-month, cancel any time | Bring your own iPad / Android tablet — $0 hardware |
| Square for Restaurants | $79/mo bundled Square Plus "$49/mo. per location" + Square KDS app "$30/mo. per device" (one device); online ordering included at $0. Retrieved August 2026. | Square Payments — 2.9% + 30¢ online on Square Plus, the same tier as the monthly above | Month-to-month — no long-term contract | Square Register / iPad-based terminals + Square peripherals |
| Clover | $179/mo — not re-confirmed Restaurant Growth — Starter, $179/mo on a 36-month term. Retrieved 6 August 2026. Clover publishes its pricing only through a script-rendered page we could not retrieve on our last pass. This figure is from 6 August 2026 and has not been re-confirmed since — check Clover's own page before relying on it. | Clover does not publish a card rate on its pricing page. | Not published on a page we could retrieve; sold through Fiserv and its reseller network, and the last figure we recorded was quoted on a 36-month term | Proprietary Clover devices (Station, Mini, Flex), tied to the merchant account |
| Lightspeed Restaurant | $219/mo bundled Essential $189/mo (cheapest tier including online ordering) + Kitchen Display System "$30/screen per month". Retrieved August 2026. | Lightspeed does not publish a card rate on its pricing page. | Not published on Lightspeed's restaurant pricing page | iPad-based; works with off-the-shelf tablets |
| TouchBistro | $69/mo published floor Point of Sale — "starting at $69 /month" (POS only; hardware required). Retrieved August 2026. POS only, and hardware is required. TouchBistro publishes no price for its Kitchen Display System or Online Ordering — both are quote-only — so a comparable bundle costs more than this floor. | TouchBistro does not publish a card rate on its pricing page. | Not published on TouchBistro's pricing page | iPad-based; TouchBistro's pricing page states hardware is required |
On payments:FoodyOS online checkout on your storefront runs on Stripe — customers pay by card at checkout, you connect your own Stripe account, and payouts settle directly from Stripe to your bank at Stripe’s published rates with no resold markup. FoodyOS never sits in the money flow, and there is no per-order commission on direct orders. In-restaurant card payments keep running through your existing terminal. For the live math against your own order volume, use the side-by-side cost calculator.
When each one is the right call
- Toast is the right call if…you run an enterprise multi-unit chain that leans on Toast’s deep ecosystem of third-party integrations, payroll, and its reseller and support network. At that scale, one vendor for hardware, software, and processing is a feature, not a bug. Full head-to-head: FoodyOS vs Toast.
- Square for Restaurants— the easiest exit ramp: month-to-month with a free entry tier, and a coherent fit if you’re already on Square hardware and Square Payments.
- Clover — your bank or merchant-services provider already handles your processing and you want the POS through that relationship; Clover is sold by Fiserv and a wide reseller network, which brings rate flexibility and quote-by-quote variation in equal measure.
- Lightspeed Restaurant — an established mid-market, iPad-based platform with strong reporting; a fit if you want depth over simplicity. It is also the most expensive published bundle in the table above, at $219/mo.
- TouchBistro — iPad-first POS built specifically for full-service restaurants; a fit if you want integrated payments and can live with kitchen display and online ordering being quoted separately rather than priced publicly.
- FoodyOS — you want the whole module surface — POS, KDS, online ordering, delivery dispatch, hostess, loyalty, inventory — flat at $149/mo, month-to-month, on tablets you already own, with your own Stripe account on checkout.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the cheapest Toast alternative?
- It depends on what you count. On sticker price, Square for Restaurants has a free entry tier for a single location, which makes it the cheapest way in. On a published price that actually covers POS, kitchen display and online ordering together, Square Plus is the cheapest we can source at $79/mo (Square Plus "$49/mo. per location" + Square KDS app "$30/mo. per device" (one device); online ordering included at $0; squareup.com, August 2026), ahead of Lightspeed at $219/mo (Essential $189/mo (cheapest tier including online ordering) + Kitchen Display System "$30/screen per month"; lightspeedhq.com, August 2026). Toast and TouchBistro both publish a lower $69/mo sticker, but both are POS-only floors: neither vendor publishes a price for kitchen display or online ordering, so neither floor is a comparable bundle. FoodyOS is $149/mo flat with every module included and no add-on ladder — cheaper than Lightspeed's published bundle, dearer than Square's. Run your own order volume through the live calculator at /us/compare before deciding.
- Does Toast require a contract?
- Toast's published pricing pairs the POS with Toast Payments, and NerdWallet's review of Toast (updated January 2026) describes a two-year processing contract with early-termination fees. The exact terms live in the merchant agreement rather than on the public pricing page, so ask for the clause in writing before you sign. FoodyOS is month-to-month with no early-termination fee.
- Can I keep my existing hardware if I switch away from Toast?
- Generally no — Toast's software runs on Toast-branded terminals, KDS screens, and handhelds, so the hardware does not carry over to another POS. That is the main switching cost to budget for. FoodyOS goes the other way: it runs on standard iPads and Android tablets and prints to any ESC/POS thermal printer, so the hardware you already own stays useful regardless of the software you run on it.
- What is the difference between Toast Payments and using my own Stripe account?
- Toast processes cards through Toast Payments and you cannot bring another processor. Toast itself publishes no card rate anywhere on its pricing page; NerdWallet's Toast review (updated January 13, 2026) reports 3.09% + 15¢ pay-as-you-go, or 2.49% + 15¢ if you purchase hardware upfront. Treat those as NerdWallet's numbers, not Toast's, and get your own rate in writing. With FoodyOS, online checkout on your storefront runs on Stripe through your own Stripe account: payouts settle directly from Stripe to your bank at Stripe's published rates, FoodyOS never sits in the money flow, and in-restaurant card payments keep running through your existing terminal.
- How much does FoodyOS cost compared to Toast?
- FoodyOS is $149/mo flat per restaurant, month-to-month, with every module included — POS, KDS, online ordering, in-house delivery dispatch, hostess and reservations, loyalty, and inventory. Toast's paid Point of Sale plan is published at $69/mo (pos.toasttab.com, August 2026), but the two figures are not the same kind of thing. POS only. Toast publishes no price for online ordering or kitchen display — both are add-ons quoted on request, so a comparable bundle costs more than this floor. Toast also publishes no card rate, so the processing side of the comparison cannot be sourced from Toast at all. The side-by-side calculator at /us/compare runs both against your actual volume.
- How does migrating from Toast to FoodyOS work?
- Menus and customer lists export from Toast as CSVs and import into the FoodyOS dashboard, and onboarding is white-glove — a real human sets it up with you. Because FoodyOS runs on tablets you already own, you can stage it alongside Toast for a few services before cutting over, so there is no dark day. Check your Toast agreement's renewal and early-termination terms before you cancel; that clause, not the software swap, is usually the slow part.
